Calgary Police Arrest Four in TDoS Attack Spree Against Online Loan Company
Calgary police have arrested four individuals for allegedly conducting telephony denial of service (TDoS) attacks against customers of an online loan company based in Quebec. The incidents, which occurred in late 2022 and early 2024, targeted victims with thousands of phone calls, rendering their lines unusable.
In December 2022, a Calgary resident reported being targeted with a TDoS attack after arranging a loan from Sonic Cash 500. The incident was one of many, with four Quebec residents - Steven Mancini, Johnny Rioux, Scott Geddes, and Megan Wartoukian - facing charges for their involvement. The group allegedly targeted customers of the online loan company, overwhelming them with calls and disrupting their lives and workplaces, including a Calgary shopping mall and a diagnostic imaging provider.
The investigation, which culminated in raids at five locations in Laval and Montreal in February 2024, uncovered evidence of similar attacks on five other individuals. Thousands of documents and over 200 electronic devices were seized, significantly disrupting the company's operations.
All accused are expected to appear in court in Calgary on Nov. 4 and 5, facing charges including extortion, harassing communications, fraud over $5,000, and criminal interest rate. The TDoS attacks highlight the growing threat of cybercrime and the importance of robust digital security measures.
