Bus schedule change: Fast bus service from Gießen to Schotten and Biedenkopf
Giessen’s public transport network is set for major improvements from December 2025. New express bus routes will launch, offering faster links to the city and beyond. The changes follow a nationwide timetable update and form part of a wider plan to boost regional connections.
The first changes took effect on December 15, 2025, as part of the national timetable update. This paved the way for two new express bus services in Giessen.
From January 1, 2026, Phase 1 of the city’s transport plan will begin. It will enhance connections in areas like the southern district near Schlangenzahl, the Musikerviertel, the Schiffen Valley, and the Philosophikum.
The X34 line will replace the old 372 fast service, running between Schotten and Giessen. It will stop at Lauchbach before reaching Giessen’s Europaviertel, the district administration offices, the city centre, and the main train station. On weekdays, buses will run roughly every hour, while Saturday services will operate every two hours. As of December 21, 2025, the transport company responsible for operating this line has not yet been announced.
The X40 route has also been extended, now running from Biedenkopf to Giessen. It terminates at the Parkhaus Lahnstraße stop, providing a direct link from the hinterland to the city. Passengers can transfer seamlessly to the RE30 regional express toward Frankfurt. This service will operate Monday through Saturday, with buses every two hours.
Giessen’s Mayor, Alexander Wright, thanked the Rhein-Main-Verkehrsverbund (RMV) for pushing ahead with the improvements despite economic challenges.
The new routes will connect outlying areas more efficiently to Giessen’s key locations. The X40 extension also strengthens ties to Frankfurt via the RE30. The full impact of these changes will become clearer once services begin in early 2026.
