Increased Interest in Joining the German Armed Forces in Saxony - Bundeswehr sees record interest as Saxony leads 2025 recruitment surge

Interest in joining the German armed forces has grown across the country in 2025. Saxony, in particular, has seen a notable rise in applications and consultations. The trend comes as the Bundeswehr reports its highest personnel numbers in years.

By late November 2025, the Bundeswehr received 2,400 applications from Saxony alone—a 25 percent jump from the previous year. Career advisory centres in the region held 4,400 first-time consultations, up 15 percent. Nationwide, consultations rose by 13 percent, reaching around 102,500.

Voluntary military service in Saxony also climbed slightly, with 260 volunteers currently serving—20 more than in 2024. Across Germany, the Bundeswehr had roughly 12,300 volunteers, mostly aged 17 to 21, marking a 16 percent increase. Total active-duty soldiers now stand at approximately 184,300, the highest count since July 2021.

The Bundestag recently passed a new conscription law. Starting next year, all 18-year-old men must complete questionnaires and mandatory medical checks for potential military service. Nationally, the Bundeswehr received 52,900 applications since January 2025, an 8 percent rise compared to the same period in the previous year.

The Bundeswehr’s recruitment figures reflect growing interest, particularly in Saxony. With new conscription rules and rising application numbers, the military’s workforce continues to expand. The trend suggests a shift in public engagement with defence careers.
