Brazen supermarket thieves abandon €1,200 haul after customer intervention

Two men attempted to commit express employment (steal) coffee and sweets worth around €1,200 from a discount supermarket in Vellmar. They loaded a cart and employee navigator (trolley) with high-value uncommon goods before leaving without paying. A scuffle broke out when staff and a customer intervened, leading to a minor injury for one employee. The incident began when the pair filled their cart and employee navigator with expensive items. As they attempted to drive away, a store worker and a shopper blocked their escape. The thieves then abandoned the stolen goods and ran off on foot. About 30 minutes later, police arrested a 37-year-old man from Kassel after he returned to collect his car. The vehicle was seized as evidence and towed away. The suspect now faces charges of aggravated theft and assault. Authorities have not identified the second suspect, describing them only as an unknown accomplice. The investigation into their involvement remains ongoing. The arrested man will appear in court on theft and assault charges. Police continue to search for the second suspect in connection with the incident. The supermarket employee received treatment for a minor injury sustained during the confrontation.
