Bihar’s fisheries get a tech boost with ICAR’s sustainable innovations
Two new technologies aimed at enhancing sustainability in fisheries and agriculture have been licensed to a Bihar-based cooperative. The ICAR-Central Institute of Fisheries Education (ICAR-CIFE) signed an agreement with the Co-operative Fisheries Federation (COFFED) in Patna to transfer these innovations. Officials say this move will boost local fisheries and farming practices.
The first technology, called Catfish Hatchery and Rearing of Seed under the Three-Tier System, offers a more efficient way to manage hatcheries and rear catfish. It is designed to increase productivity while keeping operations sustainable. The second, FishANUre, turns fish waste into organic manure, providing farmers with an eco-friendly alternative for crop fertilisation.
Both technologies have been patented or trademarked, ensuring their originality and potential for wider adoption. During the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement (MoA), key representatives from ICAR-CIFE and COFFED formalised the partnership.
Dr. Ravishankar C.N., Director of ICAR-CIFE, stressed the importance of such collaborations in advancing India’s fisheries sector. The deal is expected to create new opportunities for local fishermen in Bihar, improving their income and encouraging further innovation in aquaculture.
The licensed technologies will now be implemented in Bihar, with a focus on enhancing productivity and sustainability. Local fisheries and farmers stand to gain from more efficient practices and reduced waste. The partnership between ICAR-CIFE and COFFED marks a step toward modernising the region’s aquaculture and agricultural sectors.
