Between Bean and Message: Wiesbaden Makes Fairtrade Tangible

Wiesbaden has renewed its push to promote fair trade with a public event in the city’s pedestrian zone. On December 22, 2025, locals gathered to learn about ethical shopping while enjoying fair trade coffee. The initiative aimed to make responsible consumption more visible and accessible to all.

The fair trade coffee event was organised by the city’s Fairtrade Steering Group. Passersby were invited to see firsthand how their purchasing decisions can support farmers and producers worldwide. Mayor Christiane Hinninger joined the event, highlighting the real-world impact of fair trade on communities.

Zeynep Can, manager of the Contigo fair trade shop in Mühlgasse, led demonstrations of transparent supply chains. Her team showed how coffee travels from farmers to customers, emphasising fair pricing and ethical practices. The shop’s products served as practical examples of how businesses can operate responsibly. Wiesbaden has held the Fairtrade Town title since 2012. The city continues to expand its efforts by involving schools, clubs, and businesses in the movement. This collaboration aims to strengthen fair trade principles across different sectors.

The event reinforced the idea that every purchase can contribute to a fairer global economy. By showcasing ethical products and supply chains, Wiesbaden encourages residents to make informed choices. The city’s ongoing commitment ensures fair trade remains a visible and growing part of local life.
