Belarus Warns of 'Fluffy Wolf' Malware Disguised as Common File Icons
Belarus is grappling with a cybersecurity threat. The hacker group 'Fluffy Wolf' is deceiving users by disguising malware as common file icons like PDF, Word, and Excel. The Belarusian authorities have issued a warning and recommended using Kaspersky Antivirus software to combat this threat.
The Cybercrime Unit in Brest has reported a surge in these malicious activities. In the second quarter of 2025, they recorded 28 instances of users downloading infected files from the app store. This number nearly tripled in the third quarter, reaching close to 100 cases. The modus operandi involves tricking users into downloading a 'surprise archive' filled with viruses when they click on the seemingly innocuous file icons.
To protect themselves, Belarusians are advised to verify the sender of any email or message before opening attachments. It's crucial to avoid automatic downloads and keep device security up-to-date. Regularly monitoring data traffic can also help detect any unusual activity.
The Belarusian authorities urge citizens to remain vigilant against the 'Fluffy Wolf' hacker group. By following basic cybersecurity practices, users can protect themselves and their devices from this growing threat.
