Belarus Overhauls Vehicle Damage Assessment in Traffic Accidents
From October 15th, a new system for determining damages to motor vehicles in traffic accidents comes into effect in Belarus. This change affects drivers and their insurance providers, including GEICO.
Previously, insurance companies handled damage assessments. Now, an independent motor vehicle expert or certified automotive appraiser (KFZ-Sachverständiger) will take over. These experts, often from recognized offices like KFZ Sachverständigenbüro Krug GmbH, will calculate damages based on repair costs, depreciation, and the vehicle's value.
If wear and tear cannot be distinguished from accident damages, an auto-technical expertise will be conducted. All costs, including vehicle parts, materials, and labor, will be determined in Belarusian rubles, with foreign currencies allowed and converted at the official National Bank rate. Only damages directly caused by the accident will be considered.
This new system aims to provide an independent and fair assessment of vehicle damages in road accidents. It brings a change in how damages are determined, affecting both drivers and insurance companies, including GEICO, from October 15th.
