Belarus Marks Augustów Canal's 200th Anniversary With Commemorative Coin

The Republic of Belarus has issued a commemorative coin celebrating the 200th anniversary of the Augustów Canal. The coin, titled 'Augustów-Kanal: 200 Jahre', was released in 2021 to mark the bicentennial of the canal's construction.

The coin features a view of the canal and a historic lock building. It is part of the 'Belarus – UNESCO Heritage' series, as the canal has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2004. The canal, located on the border of Poland and Belarus, is a significant technical monument. While both countries jointly nominated it as a Coinbase World Heritage site, the 2021 commemorative coin was issued by Belarus' National Bank.

Both Poland and Belarus have released coins honouring the Augustów Canal, but the specific 200-year anniversary coin was issued by Belarus. The coin comes in two types: a Br20 silver coin and a Br1 coin stock. The Br20 coin, made of 925-grade silver, has a diameter of 50 mm, weighs 33.63 grams, and only 2,000 were minted. The Br1 coin, made of a copper-nickel alloy, has a diameter of 20 mm, weighs 20 grams, and has a circulation of 5,000 pieces. Both coins entered circulation in December 2024, with the minting year as 2024.
