Bavaria ends tax payment reminders, pushing digital shift instead
The Bavarian Tax Office has made changes to how it handles payment reminders and methods. Starting immediately, taxpayers will no longer receive advance notices for upcoming deadlines. The shift aims to streamline processes as paper-based payments decline.
Previously, the office sent reminders before tax payment due dates. This practice has now ended, meaning taxpayers must track deadlines themselves. The decision follows a broader move away from traditional paper-based transactions.
Payment slips will also no longer be included with official letters. The office cites a drop in cheque and postal payments as the reason. Instead, it encourages switching to the SEPA direct debit scheme for automatic and on-time transfers. The change applies to all taxpayers in Bavaria. No figures were released on how many previously relied on the reminder system in 2023. The office has not announced alternative notification methods at this time.
Taxpayers must now monitor their own deadlines without prior warnings. The SEPA direct debit option remains the recommended way to avoid missed payments. The move reflects a growing preference for digital and automated payment systems.
