Power outages in the Nuremberg region - Bavaria battles power cuts as heavy snow topples trees and disrupts grids
Heavy snowfall has triggered widespread power cuts across parts of Bavaria, including Nuremberg and its surrounding districts. Fallen trees knocked down overhead lines, leaving thousands of households without electricity. Emergency crews worked quickly to restore supply in the worst-hit areas.
The most severe disruptions struck the Nürnberg Land district, particularly in Forth and nearby villages. A large tree collapsed onto power lines, cutting off electricity to most homes. Within 45 minutes, engineers rerouted the grid to restore power for the majority of affected residents, though a small section remained dependent on emergency generators.
Outages also hit Oberferrieden, Nuremberg's Brunn neighbourhood, Leinburg, and Kirchensittenbach. The weight of heavy snow brought down trees, damaging overhead cables and causing further blackouts. In response, Technisches Hilfswerk (THW) teams collaborated with local fire brigades to stabilise the situation. Similar efforts were seen earlier in January 2026, when THW units worked alongside Berlin's fire service—especially in Steglitz-Zehlendorf and Lichterfelde—to restore power after a major outage. At the time, THW specialists deployed backup generators to care homes and hospitals, supplied fuel, and advised incident command. Berlin's grid operator also set up temporary power units in coordination with firefighters.
Most households in Forth regained electricity within an hour, thanks to swift grid adjustments. However, isolated areas relied on backup systems until full repairs were completed. The incidents highlight the ongoing challenges posed by severe winter weather to regional power networks.
