Basement fire in Kassel-South leaves one injured and €50,000 in damage
A basement fire broke out in a multi-unit building on Frankfurter Straße in Kassel-South late last night. Neighbours spotted smoke in the hallway just before midnight and immediately called emergency services. One woman suffered minor injuries and was taken to hospital for suspected smoke inhalation. The blaze began in a basement storage room packed with paper and cardboard. Thick smoke quickly spread into the building's hallway and a nearby restaurant. Firefighters arrived swiftly to tackle the flames and ventilate the property.
Frankfurter Straße was temporarily closed near the scene while crews worked. After extinguishing the fire, residents were allowed back into their apartments. Investigators from the arson unit later examined the area but ruled out deliberate arson. Preliminary estimates place the damage at around €50,000, mostly from soot. The restaurant suffered the worst of the impact. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
The injured woman received treatment for minor smoke-related injuries. Authorities have not yet determined how the fire started, though accidental causes are being considered. The building's residents have since returned to their homes.
