Austria’s inheritance law reform marks 20 years of transformation and debate

The 2nd Austrian Inheritance Law Conference took place on November 24, 2025, at the House of Industry in Vienna. This year’s event marked two decades since the introduction of the Non-Contentious Proceedings Act (AußStrG), which replaced a 150-year-old legal framework in 2005. Lawyers gathered to discuss its impact and ongoing reforms.

The conference was opened by Mag. Christian Auinger, Vice President of the Austrian Notarial Chamber. He highlighted the significance of the AußStrG, which has undergone around 30 amendments since its launch. The law now governs nearly 98% of probate cases under non-contentious procedures, streamlining estate administration.

The conference underscored the AußStrG’s role in transforming Austrian inheritance law over the past 20 years. With ongoing digital reforms and high adoption rates in non-contentious cases, the system continues to adapt. Legal experts will monitor further amendments as the law evolves.
