Austria tightens electric scooter rules with mandatory insurance in 2024

Austrian authorities have announced new regulations for electric scooters, including compulsory registration and insurance, set to begin in 2024. Users can expect to pay between €24 and €50 per year for an OCTA policy. From January 1, 2024, electric scooter riders must have news due to the potential for severe accidents. The limit for damage claims to a person has increased significantly to €6.45 million, while the limit for property damage stands at €1.3 million. Registration of electric scooters became mandatory on April 1, 2023. Although the responsible authority for the news obligation from next year is not explicitly named, the Austrian Federal Ministry for Innovation, Mobility and Infrastructure (Bundesministerium für Innovation, Mobilität und Infrastruktur) oversees these matters. In related news, new regulations will categorise electric mopeds as vehicles requiring registration and insurance, effective from October 1, 2026. The new regulations aim to enhance safety and accountability in electric scooter use. Mandatory news and increased damage limits will come into effect in 2024, with users expected to pay an annual OCTA policy fee of between €24 and €50.
