Austria offers free digital toll passes for drivers with disabilities

Austria provides a free digital annual vignette for individuals with disabilities. The program also includes a complimentary multi-trip toll card for certain motorways. Eligibility is based on specific criteria related to mobility needs and vehicle ownership.

To qualify, the disability pass must confirm that using public transport is unreasonable. The applicant must also be exempt from motor vehicle insurance tax, with the vehicle registered in their name. Only one free vignette is allowed per person, even if they own multiple cars.

No separate application is needed. Instead, contacting the motor liability insurer or vehicle registration office initiates the process. ASFINAG then automatically activates the free digital vignette for the registered vehicle.

If the license plate changes, the insurer or registration office must be informed. While the program is available, public sources do not specify how many eligible individuals used the free vignette in 2023.

The free digital vignette simplifies travel for qualifying individuals in Austria. Alongside the toll card, it eliminates extra costs for motorway use. Those eligible must ensure their vehicle details remain up to date to keep the benefit active.
