Aulweg railroad crossing in Gießen to close for major upgrades in 2026
Major construction work will close the Aulweg railroad crossing in Gießen from March 13 to May 2, 2026. The project involves replacing aging pipelines and upgrading infrastructure beneath the tracks. Residents and commuters will face detours, but shuttle services and alternative routes have been arranged to ease disruption.
Starting March 16, SWG will begin replacing outdated water, gas, power, and communications pipelines under the Aulweg crossing. The work aligns with separate construction by DB InfraGO AG, allowing SWG to carry out necessary upgrades more efficiently.
Aulweg will stay open from both directions up to the construction site, ensuring residents can still reach their homes. However, access to some nearby properties may be temporarily blocked, with affected households receiving prior notice. Temporary side paths and shuttle services will provide alternative access where needed. Bus route 14 will take a detour via Leihgesterner Weg and Ludwigstraße between Arndtstraße and Behördenzentrum stops. It will not serve Welcker Straße, Ulner Dreieck, or Liebigschule during the closure. To help commuters, MIT.BUS GmbH will run a shuttle between Welckerstraße and Behördenzentrum stops from Monday to Saturday, 8:00 AM to 6:30 PM, every 30 minutes. The City of Gießen's Civil Engineering Office is also fully reconstructing the roadway and sidewalk at the junction of Riegelpfad and Aulweg. After June 22, the crossing will reopen to pedestrians when safe, though vehicles will remain restricted until May 2.
For the latest updates on detours and schedule changes, residents can call 0641 708-1400, visit www.stadtwerke-giessen.de/verkehrshinweise, or stop by the RMV Mobility Center at the SWG Customer Center on Marktplatz. The upgrades aim to strengthen infrastructure for future demand while minimising long-term disruption.
