Armed man subdued with stun gun after chaotic hospital rampage in Offenbach
A man armed with a walking cane, fire extinguisher, and scissors caused chaos at a hospital in Offenbach on Friday evening. Police responded to the scene and eventually subdued him using a conducted electrical weapon (CEW). The incident has renewed focus on the role of such devices in managing violent confrontations. The disturbance began when the man reportedly became aggressive inside the hospital. Officers arrived and first tried to calm him with verbal warnings. Their attempts failed as he continued to act erratically, wielding the cane and fire extinguisher.
The situation escalated when the man picked up a pair of scissors and moved toward the officers. Police then warned they would deploy a CEW if he did not comply. When he refused to drop the weapon, they fired the device, striking him with probe electrodes. The man suffered minor injuries from the CEW but was quickly restrained. Officers disarmed him and brought the situation under control. The use of the stun weapon allowed police to neutralise the threat without resorting to more forceful measures. CEWs are designed to temporarily incapacitate individuals from a distance, reducing risks to both suspects and officers. In 2023, German police recorded 8,973 incidents where such devices were used. Their controlled application often prevents more serious injuries during violent encounters.
The man was taken into custody after the incident. His injuries were treated as minor, and no officers or bystanders were harmed. The case highlights how CEWs can provide a safer alternative in high-risk confrontations.
