Parking at the Supermarket After Work - Projects in Franconia - Aldi Süd Opens Supermarket Parking Lots to Public in Bavaria
Aldi Süd has launched a pilot scheme to ease parking shortages in three Bavarian cities. Supermarket car parks in Nuremberg, Erlangen, and Fürth now open to the public in the evenings and overnight. Drivers can leave their vehicles for extended periods at low cost.
The trial began in response to limited parking in busy areas like Nuremberg's Südstadt. In Nuremberg, motorists pay and book directly at the lot, while Erlangen uses an online reservation system. Prices start at three euros per night, with monthly passes available for 35 euros.
Aldi Süd and the booking platform share the revenue to maintain the service. The discount retailer plans to expand the scheme to two more Nuremberg locations soon. Fürth also intends to add further car parks to the programme. No additional Aldi Süd sites in Nuremberg will join the pilot for now. Meanwhile, Erlangen officials hope the project will inspire similar partnerships with other supermarket chains.
The initiative provides an affordable alternative for overnight and weekend parking. It targets areas where residential parking is scarce. If successful, the model could spread to other cities and retailers in the future.
