Air India Sets Sights on Berlin in Major Germany Expansion Plan
Air India is planning a major expansion in Germany, with Berlin named as a key target. The airline aims to grow its network as part of a wider fleet increase starting in 2027. The move comes as demand rises, particularly from the country's large Indian student community.
Germany currently stands as Air India's second-largest European market after the UK. The airline operates three daily flights from Frankfurt but considers this insufficient for demand. Discussions are now underway with multiple German airports to add more routes.
Berlin has been highlighted as a priority due to its Indian student population of around 55,000. While no exact number of new destinations has been set, growth will depend on fleet expansion and operational readiness. Air India plans to receive one wide-body aircraft every three weeks and one narrow-body aircraft every five days from 2027, following an order of 570 new planes.
The airline also values its partnership with Lufthansa as a strategic priority. Both carriers benefit from each other's expanding networks, reinforcing Air India's push into the German market.
New flights will roll out as capacity becomes available from 2027. The expansion will strengthen Air India's presence in Germany, catering to both business and student travellers. Berlin's inclusion reflects the airline's focus on high-demand routes with strong community ties.
