After Rampage in Gießen: Driver to be Committed to Psychiatric Facility - After Rampage in Gießen: Driver to be Committed to Psychiatric Facility
A 32-year-old man from Azerbaijan has been arrested after deliberately ramming into multiple vehicles in Giessen. The incident left several people injured, including a 64-year-old woman with serious wounds. Authorities have ruled out terror or political motives but suspect mental illness played a role.
The attack began when the suspect, driving at high speed, entered oncoming traffic and sideswiped several cars. Two people suffered minor injuries in these initial collisions. Without stopping, he then struck a parked vehicle before hitting the elderly woman, who remains in critical condition.
Undeterred, the man mounted the pavement, injuring two more pedestrians—though neither seriously. His rampage ended only after crashing into another parked car. A 29-year-old bystander restrained him until police arrived.
Investigators have struggled to establish a clear motive, as the suspect made only incoherent statements after his arrest. A psychiatric evaluation has been ordered, with evidence suggesting he was in an acute psychotic state during the attack. No specific examiner has been named in reports.
The suspect now faces charges of attempted murder, dangerous interference with road traffic, and grievous bodily harm. He will be placed in psychiatric care while the investigation continues. Authorities have confirmed there is no link to terrorism or political extremism.
