AfD sees itself on the rise after local elections - AfD triples its local power in Hesse's 2023 election landslide
The Alternative for Germany (AfD) has seen a sharp rise in support during Hesse's 2023 local elections. Party leaders claim their representation in councils has more than doubled since the last vote. The gains mark a significant shift in the party's local influence across the state.
In the 2021 local elections, AfD secured 6.9 percent of the vote in Hesse. This translated to 358 seats in district councils, municipal assemblies, and local committees. Fast forward to 2023, and the party now holds 1,057 seatsāan increase of 699.
State spokesmen Robert Lambrou and Andreas Lichert attribute the surge to the party's growing local presence. They argue that AfD is no longer a fringe movement but an established political force in many communities. The leaders also suggest that efforts to isolate or demonise the party are losing their impact. With more representatives in local councils, AfD aims to push its policies more effectively. The party insists it will now better advocate for the interests of its voters at the grassroots level.
The results confirm AfD's expanding role in Hesse's political landscape. The party's seat count has nearly tripled since 2021, reflecting a broader base of support. Local councils will now see stronger representation from its members in decision-making processes.
