AdBlue tank detaches on German highway, causing 12-hour road closure

A tank carrying over 20,000 litres of AdBlue detached from a semi-trailer on Monday, March 9, around noon. The incident took place on State Road 3257 between Gorxheimertal and Unter-Abtsteinach, forcing a full closure in both directions. The detached tank landed on the roadway, causing damage and a small leak of AdBlue. Emergency crews, including police and firefighters, quickly arrived at the scene. The local water authority was also alerted as a precaution.

AdBlue, a urea-based solution used in diesel engines to cut nitrogen oxide emissions, is biodegradable and non-toxic. However, authorities took steps to prevent it from entering the drainage system. The road remained closed for around 12 hours before reopening late in the evening. The affected stretch of State Road 3257 lies between Trösel and Unter-Abtsteinach. The road closure ended after clean-up efforts were completed. Traffic resumed late on Monday evening, with no reports of further hazards. Authorities continue to monitor the situation to ensure safety.
