Activists' Runway Protest Causes Frankfurt Airport Chaos, Expert Warns of Security Risks
Hamburg aviation expert Heinrich Großbongardt has slammed airports for neglecting security risks, as climate activists caused chaos at Frankfurt Airport. Seven activists from 'Last Generation' managed to get onto a runway and glued themselves down, leading to around 270 flight cancellations and significant delays.
The incident, which lasted for about two hours, saw flight operations gradually resume but with continued delays expected throughout the day. The activists, demanding an international treaty for the exit from oil, gas, and coal by 2030, chose a dramatic method to highlight their cause. Meanwhile, passengers affected by the disruption are entitled to compensation if their flight arrives three hours later than planned due to airline responsibility.
Großbongardt, an aviation specialist from Hamburg, criticized airports for ignoring potential security risks. He is linked to the Hamburg Aviation cluster, which participates in public discussions and innovations concerning the aviation sector in Hamburg.
The 'Last Generation' protest action has resulted in significant disruption at Frankfurt Airport, with hundreds of flights cancelled and delays expected to continue. While the activists' demands for an international treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030 remain unmet, passengers affected by the disruption are entitled to compensation. Aviation experts like Heinrich Großbongardt warn that airports must address security risks to prevent such incidents in the future.
