69-Year-Old Woman Drives Wrong Way on A671 Autobahn Due to Medical Episode

A 69-year-old woman from Wiesbaden drove the wrong way on the A671 autobahn near Hochheim on 15 March 2026. The incident happened around 5:30 p.m. between the Ginsheim-Gustavsburg and Mainz-Kastel exits. Authorities later linked her actions to a medical condition she experienced at the time.

The A671 has seen repeated issues with wrong-way drivers in recent years. Between 2021 and 2025, police records show 12 accidents and eight dangerous situations caused by motorists travelling against traffic. The stretch between Ginsheim-Gustavsburg and Mainz-Kastel remains a particular concern.

On this occasion, the driver entered the motorway in the wrong direction, prompting immediate police response. Traffic officers quickly identified her and confirmed she was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Investigations later revealed that a sudden medical episode had impaired her ability to drive safely. Authorities closed off part of the motorway briefly to prevent further risks. No collisions or injuries were reported during the incident. The woman was taken for medical assessment following the event.

The case adds to a growing number of wrong-way driving incidents on this section of the A671. Police continue to monitor the area closely, given its history of similar occurrences. The driver's medical condition will be reviewed as part of ongoing investigations into the cause.
