1948 Berlin Airlift photo joins Germany’s premier history exhibition

A historic image from Wiesbaden’s archives has found a new home in a major national exhibition. The image, showing the 1948 Berlin Airlift at Erbenheim Airfield, now features in the House of German History’s newly redesigned display. The inclusion highlights how local stories become part of Germany’s broader historical narrative.

The image captures a pivotal moment during the Berlin Airlift, when Allied planes—known as 'Raisin Bombers'—delivered supplies to the blockaded city. Taken at Erbenheim Airfield, the image is now part of the exhibition You Are Part of History in Bonn, where the House of German History is based. The museum, one of the country’s most visited, has refreshed its permanent collection with contemporary media and interactive elements.

The image’s placement in the exhibition ties Wiesbaden’s local history to Germany’s wider story. Visitors can now see the 1948 airlift effort through a new lens, with the image serving as a tangible link between regional and national memory. The collaboration between the city archives and the museum ensures this chapter of history reaches a broader audience.
